Fly Porsche Carrera 6

Incredible appeal

The real Porsche Carrera 6 shows an incredible appeal. Fly managed to reflect this to the model. There is only one critical issue to mention about this model.
The lenses of the headlights do not fit perfectly. The tires are pretty good and together with the strong magnet you have a car with a magnificent down force.

Back in the sixties

Porsche was only able to bring de Carrera 6 to the circuits after the intervention of the FIA. It is known that manufacturers have to bring a certain number of cars on the market before they can use the model in the motor sport. The people of Porsche were afraid not selling the necessary 100 cars, because for that time the price was very high. The customer had to pay more than 45.000 DM. Other sport cars were sold for around 30.000 DM. The FIA was generous and decreased the number from 100 to 50. In the end, after the success of the model was proven, Porsche succeeded to sell many cars of this type.
Parts of two other cars are used to build the Carrera 6. The frame was used of the Porsche 904 GTS and the engine was taken from the 911. The outside became an original design and was copied by other car manufacturers.

Beautiful Carrera model

As said, the model that is used for this review is the version of the Jochen Rindt and Nino Vaccarella Carrera 6 as entered in the Nürburgring 1000-km race of 1966. The color of the body is white and the front cover is in orange. This coloring scheme helps you to get focused on this fast model. The dark blue version, although highly attractive, will be difficult to follow during a race.
Maybe you are afraid that the two small front spoilers and mirrors will break easily. Don't be. During the test runs the car de-slotted many times (especially when racing without magnet) but survived. No parts were missing after hundreds of laps.
Absolutely beautiful are the green rear screen and the tinted dark green parts of glass of the cockpit. There is only one critical issue to mention about this model. The lenses of the headlights do not fit perfectly. Remarkable is the body. The orange side parts are attached to the body instead of the chassis. The inside of the car shows no real peculiarities. The color of the chassis is gray, not black. The sidewinder chassis holds a strong magnet. The pinion has 11 z and the gear 36 z.

Carrera on the track

In my reviews you will learn how the car handles (with and without a magnet) on a smooth track and on a rough surface. For testing slot cars I use a Scalextric Sport and a track of Ninco.
The out of the box performance of the car is good. The rubber slicks keep the model on the right track. Normally I do sand the tires and round the rims, but not in this case. The wheels are all very flat when the car came from the factory. The model looks to be designed for smooth surface type of track. This Porsche gives you all you need on a Sport track. The car requests all your skills (in a positive way) to run this model at the limit.
The standard car is far too sticky on a Ninco track. In my opinion the cars is running too much like a train, because no sliding is possible due to the heavy magnet. For that reason is the handling of the model not very attractive on this track. But if you like this kind of racing, the Porsche Carrera 6 can be your choice.
Without a magnet you need to be very careful. The car tends to lift at the front. For that reason the model de-slots easy without the down force of the magnet. A little weight behind the front wheels keeps the car in the slot. With this small adjustment you can have lost of fun with the Porsche Carrera 6.

Famous car of the sixties

In other words, I like the appearance and the handling of this famous car of the sixties. The Porsche Carrera 6 recalls the memories of the times that the drivers had to run to their cars. It is pity that times go by, but you can bring back the exiting period of racing to your slot car track.
