New advanced track system of Scalextric

The new advanced track system of Scalextric is called "Sport". The new system offers a new track surface, a deeper slot and many new exciting track sections.

New range of Sport sets

Scalextric claims that excitement is guaranteed with the new range of Sport sets. They are absolutely right.

New design

According to Scalextric the Sport track has been designed to be compatible in geometric terms to the long established Classic track however the Sport track differs from classic in several important areas.
With the new system Scalextric is loyal to the users of the old system, today known as the Classic. The Sport track is fully compatible with Scalextric Classic track when used with C8222 converter straight.

Refined surface

To keep up in competition Scalextric has decided to renew their track system. It is obvious that they feel the competition of Ninco. Some model car racers think that the surface of the Ninco track is too rough and the Classic Scalextric track is too slippery. In my opinion the new semi smooth racing surface of Sport is not too rough and not too slippery.

Easy fit connection

With the new slide and click system it is easy to assemble and dismantle a track. Within a few minutes it is possible to create a track. This feature is attractive for people who do not have a permanent track.

Renewed metal lugs

The renewed metal lugs ensure that there is reliable electrical contact between the track pieces.

Slot and rail depth

With the Classic Scalextric track it was necessary to slice an inch of the guides of the Ninco cars. The slot of the new track is deeper. Now all the cars of other manufacturers run smoothly on the track.
I noticed that the cars of Carrera face a small problem, because of the big guides. The distance between the two pick-up braids is a little bit too big to get solid contact with the strips. The spring-loaded trucks of GB Track and Fly hit a plastic piece in the slot of the connection straight. The sound can be very annoying. It reminds me of the sound that the old mechanical lap counters made.
The metal strips flush with the track surface. The new design reduces wheel bouncing as the cars move over the slots.

Power and control

The powerbase gives fully independent power and control to each car when two adapters are used. You only have to use the switch when one adapter is connected. Scalextric offers standard 60 Ohms hand controllers with dynamic braking.
Do not be alarmed if the new controllers give a smell. Scalextric warns the users that during initial use the controller can become warm and may give off a slight smell and emit a vapour when new.

Plugs of the Scalextric controllers

The plugs of the Scalextric controllers are the same as used by the standard controllers of Ninco. So it is possible to use the Ninco controllers if you like them better.
I personally prefer the 45 Ohms controllers of Parma, because they offer better acceleration.

Special track sections

Scalextric is the only brand that offers crossovers in the curves. While racing these crossover curves show a more natural way of changing lines than the crossovers on straight sections.

Side Swipe Straight

The new chicane is called "Side Swipe Straight". Only one line is bending at this new chicane. It is possible to connect the Side Swipe Straight to a special hairpin curve.
Especially children will like the leap straight (ramp up and down). Scalextric offer also a street level straight crossover.

Future

The new Scalextric Sport system is a major development in model car racing. Will this excellent new system be as successful as the Classic system? Time will tell!
